Background Information

The Lego SPIKE App is used to program and control robots created using the Lego SPIKE Prime Portfolio of robotics kits. The Lego SPIKE app is an Android application that is distributed via the Google Play Store on Chromebooks.

To support the Lego Spike App in our environment, KIPP Texas IT deployed a managed version of the Google Play store to all student Chromebooks. The Managed Google Play store allows IT to limit the programs available for installation on a device though Google Play, while allowing students to download and install the Lego SPIKE App. We opted to enable this software for student download instead of pushing it to devices, as only robotics students need the Lego Spike App.

Installation:

  • Have students log into their Chromebook.
  • Have the students expand the app launcher by clicking the launcher circle icon in the lower left corner of the screen.

  • Once the app launcher is opened, click the up arrow to expand to see all apps.

  • Google Play should appear as one of the listed programs.

  • Within Google Play, students should be able to see the Lego Spike App and click on it to download.

  • Once installed the Lego Spike App should remain on the student Chromebook, even when a student reboots.
